Dungeons & Dragons Acting Class

The Arts Council of the Trussville Area (ACTA)

Weekly acting class for students from 5th – 12th grade; Class fee is $120 for the 8-week session, meeting weekly on Tuesdays.
Based on the popular game Dungeons and Dragons, this class teaches character development and improvisation. Each student will take on the role of a character that they create, complete with a backstory, motivations, strengths and weaknesses. They will learn to step into the shoes of that character in order to advance the plot of the story.
The instructor, Alex Wilson will be the Game Master (GM), and will narrate the storyline, creating scenes for the characters and leading them to navigate through different scenarios, problems, and puzzles that they will solve as their characters, working as a team with other classmates. As they develop their characters, the students will determine how the story will go through improvisation. There is no script, only their character backgrounds and details.
During the first class, students will learn the game: rules, expectations, and the options of character choices. Students will then work to develop their characters. During the following sessions, the characters will encounter various puzzles, riddles, and adversaries that they will battle.
Alex Wilson is a first grade teacher at Bryant Park Elementary School in Clay. She also leads the drama program there. She led a similar program for 4th and 5th graders there for the past two years. Although Dungeons and Dragons can be played with dark monsters, her version of the game will not include any themes involving demon imagery. Students will face classic fantasy and mythological creatures such as vampires, zombies, and the titular dragons.
